Deodorant - a matter of health
Alright, time to get personal here. I'm a sweater. Yep, I said it. Not the warm and cozy kind that you wear in the winter - the wet and stinky kind that you come across in the summer ... haha. I bike to work, I run on my lunch hours, and I play Ultimate in the evenings and on the weekends. It's important to me that I don't stink all day and night, so deodorant is definitely part of my daily routine.
When I first encountered this problem of sweating when I was 9 or 10, my mom got me the usual stuff off the shelves at the store. You know ... baby powder scent, and all that jazz. I used that for the most part until I went away to university and decided to switch to antiperspirant to cut down on the sweat puddles on my shirts. A few years later, I started to develop some bumpy, sore, redness, which led me to investigate alternatives. I landed on deodorant so that I could avoid the aluminum that is so popular in antiperspirants.
Finally, once I started using essential oils, it dawned on me that I no longer need to worry about whether or not the deodorant or antiperspirant I use may lead to breast cancer or an increased risk of any cancer. I can use a safer alternative that's made of ingredients that I know and understand. What's better, is that there's evidence that the oils I'm using in my deodorant may actually help PREVENT breast cancer!
So what's in this deodorant I speak of? Well, I use coconut oil, bentonite clay, arrowroot powder, baking soda, and essential oils in mine. I keep it in a mason jar, and just apply it with my fingers. You certainly could put it in a deodorant container though.
And the best parts? It's affordable, it's safe, it's quick and easy to make, and it smells good! That's right - I don't smell like body odour, nor do I have the "used deodorant" smell about me at the end of the day. Worst case scenario, I smell like coconut oil and whatever beautiful essential oils I have selected for the current batch! Win, win, win, win, win, win, WIN!
I keep this at home, but I also keep a container of dōTERRA deodorant at work in case I need to freshen up after a bike ride in to work.
You can also find a recipe for a similar deodorant on the dōTERRA blog which uses all the same ingredients except for the bentonite clay.

Homemade Deodorant
1 wooden, ceramic, or plastic measuring spoon *do NOT use metal when bentonite clay is involved!
1 short and stubby 1 cup glass jar (I use these ones)
6 tablespoons coconut oil
4 tablespoons arrowroot powder (I get mine here)
4 tablespoons baking soda
2 tablespoons bentonite clay (I get mine here and here)
10-20 drops essential oil (I like frankincense and Balance)
4 tablespoons arrowroot powder (I get mine here)
4 tablespoons baking soda
2 tablespoons bentonite clay (I get mine here and here)
10-20 drops essential oil (I like frankincense and Balance)
Melt the coconut oil in the top of a double boiler on the stove. Meanwhile combine the powder, soda and clay in the jar.
Add the melted coconut oil to the powdery mixture in two additions, combining well with a wooden, ceramic, or plastic utensil (I use a wooden chopstick usually).
Add the drops of oils, then allow to cool so it can firm up.
Store in a cool, dry, and shaded place. Apply to dry underarms daily.
