Homemade Toothpaste & Mouthwash

It's been a long time since we have used one of the big toothpaste brands in our home. Between the triclosan, microbeads, fluoride and other nonsense it them, we've decided they're just not for us. We have experimented with a few of the "natural" and "organic" brands with great success, but on the whole they can be quite pricey. Besides - if I can make it myself, why not?

This toothpaste recipe is really similar to the deodorant which is sort of funny on one level, but reassuring on another. After all, if I can't trust something on my body, why should I trust it in my mouth? (and vice versa).

Honestly, this is pretty salty and it's not for everyone. My husband is not a fan, but I've grown quite accustomed to it, and my oral health has never been better!

AND, if you want fresh breath without fresh chemicals, test out the homemade mouthwash below.

Homemade Toothpaste

1 wooden, ceramic, or plastic measuring spoon *do NOT use metal when bentonite clay is involved!
1 short and stubby 1/2 cup glass jar (I use these ones)
2 tablespoons distilled water
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 tablespoons bentonite clay (I get mine here and here)
5-10 drops essential oil (I like OnGuard and peppermint)

Melt the coconut oil in the top of a double boiler on the stove. Meanwhile combine the soda and clay in the jar.

Add the melted coconut oil to the powdery mixture in two additions, combining well with a wooden, ceramic, or plastic utensil (I use a wooden chopstick usually).

Add the drops of oils, then allow to cool so it can firm up.

Store in a cool, dry, and shaded place. Apply a pea-sized amount to your toothpaste and brush as usual!

Homemade Mouthwash

1 cup distilled water
1/4 teaspoon salt
5 drops of OnGuard
4 drops of peppermint essential oil
2 drops of frankincense essential oil
1 glass bottle

Here's the tough part: add it all to the bottle and shake it. The end. Haha!

Take a mouthful, swish, gargle and spit.

Store in a cool, dry, and shaded place.
