Essential Oils: My Story
My journey with essential oils began over six years ago when my midwife recommended I use lavender essential oil to help with postpartum healing after the birth of my first child. Within the year, I started using lavender in my all purpose cleaning spray and adding tea tree oil to the washing machine whenever I washed our cloth diapers.
Years later, I picked up some mandarin orange essential oil to test out a DIY recipe I had found on Pinterest for a coconut oil & sugar body scrub. It smelled yummy I wanted to use it all the time!
In 2015 when I was pregnant with my third child, I saw an old acquaintance post something on Facebook about using essential oils to clean her home and to soothe her teething child. That peaked my interest! Teething children are one of my greatest early parenting challenges, so I had to find out more and try it out for myself! I didn't know where to find this particular brand of essential oils that seemed to give such miraculous results, so I ended up doing a kijiji search. I came across a lady that lived nearby whom was selling memberships to an essential oil distributorship.
Within a week I had joined and received my kit complete with a diffuser and a variety of essential oils. It wasn't long before I was using essential oils on a daily basis. Frankincense went on my face and my belly every day (remember - I was pregnant, and was trying to ward off any additional stretch marks). I used a protective blend in my homemade toothpaste that I started making. There was cedarwood, spearmint, frankincense and lime in my homemade deodorant, and peppermint in my homemade lip balm. I was rolling protective blend on the soles of my feet and my children's feet at bedtime, and diffusing lavender in our bedrooms at night. I was making dishwasher powder, toilet bowl scrub, muscle relief rub and even beard oil for my husband.
Finally, around the holidays in 2016, I started to learn more about the business side of multi-level marketing and became very interested. I began to think about how much using essential oils had supported me in changing the way I lived. I suddenly felt selfish for not having shared my new knowledge and passion with my friends and family. Why was I leaving them to use harmful chemicals on their bodies and in their homes when I had found a safe and health-promoting alternative?
As I did more research to prepare myself for launching a business with essential oils, I began to examine the big essential oil companies more closely. It wasn't long before I realized that I needed to make a change to a company whose values aligned better with my own. It took just one phone call to an old friend from university to convince me it was time to begin my journey with dōTERRA Essential Oils. And the rest, they say .... is history!
